Nothing Gold Can Stay...

November 11, 2010

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold,
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

"Stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold."  I will always think of The Outsiders when I read this poem.  It is beautiful.  Ol' Bob Frost had a way with words about nature.  On my day away, I was just overwhelmed by the beauty of autumn.  Leaves were falling, almost like snow at times.

I love being home -- I think I've mentioned that.  I especially love our home in the fall.  We are so fortunate to have such natural surroundings.

I spent Sunday afternoon outside trying to undo three years of erosion.  I made some decent progress, but it's going to take a few more afternoons to finish what I've started.  That's the story of my life...one unfinished project after another!

I hope you take some time to stand in the breeze and let leaves fall all around you.  It's magical!  My girls are coming around and they no longer roll their eyes when I point out another beautiful tree along our daily route.  Someday, when they have children and I'm the Mimi, they'll do the same thing and their children will roll their eyes, too (just like I did with my mom).  History tends to repeat itself!

  1. I noticed yesterday how beautiful some of the leaves are. I do love it! It just never lasts long enough. Maybe that helps keep the awe alive every year.
